Setting up a programming lab in one hour.

“Setting up the Webserver on a Mac is trivial. You open the System preferences, select sharing, check a check box and the Apache Web Server that ships with every copy of Mac OS X is up and working.”...

“The CVS on my TiBook is configured to use ssh. How hard would it be to get everyone running CVS? Turns out it was no problem at all. All Mac OS X boxes ship with CVS included. It took less than a minute per machine to pop open a Terminal window and checkout the repository.”...

“It may seem that I'm beating a horse to death but even as an experienced Mac user I was astounded at how easy it was to set up these machines. It took forty-five minutes to set up a lab from scratch.”...

What a day. My wife got all pissed off at my dad for some reason and then her dad got into a fight with my dad. Now my dad is gone. Left, never to return. He thinks that they never wanted him here in the first place. I dont know what happened. This sucks.

So I'm sitting here working away and then I realize that I have not received any email for few hours. I check my server and sure enough, clogged. Looks like some lame spammer clogged up my server again. Lost about 2 hours worth of email. I hate spammers.

Anyone know where I can rent a 1 ton truck with a 5th wheel? Anyone know where I can buy one for around $4500?

What is wrong with kids today. Yes, this is my usual rant on, “BMXers can't write.” As you may know, I am one of the editors at Barspin.com. We have sections where the public can add content to the web site. The content is added mostly by BMXers. Kids that ride. Let me tell you, they do not have school as a priority.

“me jason, fabien and all dat have made a wiked bmx video”

Not only BMXers have this problem. I see lots of young adults that share in the grammatical deficiencies. Most of them don't even care. Bad spelling, no capitalization, and no punctuation.

“these bars r super good, with being light and strong there kool for street and dirt, but watch out some of them cum bent!!!”

It just makes me very unhappy to see writing like this. I know that my own writing is not the best, but I try to at least have proper capitalization an punctuation. Just like having good coding skills, I like to have good writing skills. I hope this shows.

Msg:#499 of 1364Date:2003-02-23Subj:I have switched back to Mozill...

I have switched back to Mozilla as my main browser. I have noticed that it renders the pages faster and more correct. I also have a problem with entering text into textarea's with Safari. I'll get the first line in and then the next lines are invisible. It's because I'm using CSS on my input and textarea tags. The default form input boxes have a grey line on top and left and a white line on the right and bottom. It just does not look good on a white background. So I put the line so you can see it all the way around. I give it a Apple OS X look. I like it much better this way. Safari's form widgets do not use the CSS tags. They use the system widgets for the web pages. One thing I really do like is the file browse button on Safari. Anyway, I'll use Mozilla until Safari gets a bit better.

I found out about “curly quotes” today. To get them on the Mac, use option-[ and option-shift-[.

There are a lot of others “special” characters too.

Today I setup my repeater at the auto parts store. When I first put it up it was running great. I had good signal and was able to surf the web for a bit. After I left I went to help Dave get his computer online using the repeater. After fooling around for about an hour I decided to go check the repeater. Sure enough the repeater was down. I was unable to get it to connect to the main tower after that. Looks like the repeater is not going to work at the auto parts store. I think the cause is too many things in the way. Trees, buildings, and other things are blocking most of the signal. I have two options. Get the antenna's higher off the roof, or move the repeater to somewhere else. Monday I will be going to Pipers to ask if I can put the repeater on their roof. It's just too bad about the auto parts store.

If anyone else upgraded Debian and found that uw-imap stopped working because they no longer support plain text password on non-ssl connections. And if you were like me and could not figure out how to fix it (well, I figured it out by accident). I have the solution. Run dpkg-reconfigure uw-imap. That will run the configuration scripts and allow you to set it up to run on a SSL connection. After messing with installing and reinstalling for a while I finally tried this and it fixed it right up.

Msg:#495 of 1364Date:2003-02-20Subj:Don't buy Linksys products. T...

Don't buy Linksys products. Their I have been burned by them 3 times now. Their WET11's die and have to be replaced (2 out of 4). Their new WAP11's do not do DHCP (in my configuration). Their customer service sucks. I asked them why DHCP did not work with the WET11's, and they just told me to use Static IP's. How lame is that! I require DHCP. I'm not going to go around resetting IP addresses if I need to change them!

D-Link DWL-900AP is a much better product. They even have a DHCP server in them. They are only a few dollars more than the WAP11's. They have a RG-SMA in place of the RG-TNC external antenna connectors.

I don't know why I bought two more WAP11's after I swore not to buy Linksys again. I guess I just needed to be reminded.

No More Linksys...Ever!

If I had 10k, I would buy the proper wireless equipment. Orinoco AP-1000 dual card radio's. I need three of them at $500 each.
