The Day After
It's Sunday night and all seems well. Then a stream of HDD Unrecoverable messages few across the console. CRASH...All was gone. Going back to the start....
Friday was my T1 install day. I installed the T1 system and tweaked it to perfection. Took all day to do it. For the weekend I had buddies coming over to hang out. Friends I had not seen in a while. So I decided that I would do my backup of the system on Monday after everyone has left. I figured it would take most of the day to do.
After my friends left I finally get back to the Office to check things out. I notice that my email is not working, so I check the console. The hard drive crashed. I'm thinking that I can just run FSCK on it and fixed it right up. So I reboot it.....Bad...All bad.
The hard drive was toast. I had lost everything that I did on Friday. I'm thinking to my self, no big deal. I'll setup a new system and restore the data from the 2nd hard drive. I have a script that backs up the data each night to the 2nd hard drive.
Bummer... The script stopped backing up in Jan 2002. Not only that, but I didn't have my email archive included in the script. I just lost 5 years of email and all of my development code. I lost all my user accounts. I lost everything.
Lucky for me, on friday I moved my web directories to the new web server. I retained my Billing system and web sites. So the job was to restore the T1 router, user accounts from the billing system, the DNS server, and my email server.
Well, 12 hours later I have the system all up and running. I'm missing my email and my dev code. Not too bad. I did loose a client web site that I'll have to re do. Still hope.
I also checked a few sites to find a hard drive recovery company. Looks like it will be about $700 to recover the data from the hard drive. I'll keep checking around and see if I can get a better price. I sure would like to get my email back.
For now... Time to restore my dev system.... and a better backup system.
