Mutt.app
Well, I'm at it again. In the 7 years that I have used Linux, I have yet to find a good GUI email client. I have always used Mutt text mode email client. I really like Mutt, but I wish I could have a GUI version of Mutt. Well, since no one is going to make one, I guess I will have to do it myself. But, I'm not going to make a Linux version first. I am going to make a OS X version. The reason is because that is the platform that I am using right now. This will be my first real programming project. Real as in not a script and bigger than a few thousand lines of code. Most likely it will be programmed in Objective C. What I want to do is extend the Mutt source code to provide a GUI frontend. I will also want to abstract as much as I can so it can be ported to GTK or QT for Linux and other Unix systems.
This is going to be a very big project. It will take a long time to do. I do not have much spare time to work on it. I wish I could spend 8 hours a day on it, but I only have about 1 hour a day, maybe 5 hours a week.
Maybe I should make another page for projects.... ;-)

MyMP3 Version 2.6 Released.
Another release. This release fixes bugs in the queue and search. I have also added a remote control and a status that will refresh every 5 sec. I don't think that there are any more bugs in this system now. I did find a major bug in the mserv software. It does not respect the ratings. I'll have to download the source code and hack on it for a while. The mserv project is not being worked on and was requested that someone else take over the project. I guess I'll have to cut my teeth on Sourceforge.
Download it here: MyMPGs Version 2.6

Msg:#342 of 1364Date:2002-06-11Subj:I received the SMA to BNC adap...
I received the SMA to BNC adapters yesterday. The problem is that I needed reverse polarity SMA. I modified one to see if I can make it work. I think it will work. I clipped the pin off and put it on the PCI card. I'm sure its making contact with the pin, but I'm not sure how much loss I will get with it. I'll have to order some one day. This was the last part to make this thing work. I now need to setup the other side and aim the dishes. If all goes well, we will have a 5 mile wireless link. I can't wait. In one more week, this should be all setup.
I have been using OS X for a few days now, and I have to say that its kinda neat. I really need a bigger monitor though. I might have to plug my 21" back in. Just not enough screen to work on. OS X does not have window shade like OS 9 had. That really sucks for working. I always have to iconify the windows to work. Its really hard to do when I'm working with a text editor and a web browser. I'll make a change then have to switch then switch back. Overlapping windows sucks too. I'm used to having my email next to my web browser and my editor below them. With that setup I could see all my apps at once without having to click on anything. Another thing I dont like is this click to focus. I like just moving my mouse over and start working. With OS X I have to click on the windows all the time. I have to click on the window then click again at where I want to be in the window. I have found a problem with the email client also. I can't scroll with the arrow keys. I can pgup/pgdown, but not scroll. I guess I can't have it all. Maybe with the next version of OS X (10.2) it will have the features I want.
One of our chickens is hurt right now. They were all going over to the neighbors and their hunting dog (bird dog) caught one. It broke the wing and messed up the leg of the chicken. We had to fence the chickens up for a while so they would not go next door. I had to put the hurt chicken in a box so the other chickens would stop pecking it. It looks like she is healing but her wing is going to be messed up. I'll know in a few weeks. All I know is that taking care of animals really sucks.
Well, thats all for now.

I just checked the FedEx tracking for my Cube and it looks like it will be here today!
I have my wireless network almost setup now. I have my server setup for wireless, but I still need to add PPPoE and DHCP for keeping people from using free services. My antenna is finished, but we need just one more connector to connect it to the Linksys cards. SMA to BNC.
We should have that setup by next week.
I'll write more when I get my cube!

Well, its here! I am now the proud owner of a Power Mac G4 Cube!
I found out a few things while installing the software. I found out that I can't run Mozilla without having classic mode installed. Now I'm reinstalling everything (because I dont know any other way yet).
It sure is a good looking computer. I have a lot of setting up to do though.

Sounds like Bob had the SMA to BNC connectors that we need for our stuff. He is shipping them to us right now. I hope its the right ones. If so, in a few days we will have our wireless network going.
Fun fun fun.

Wooohooo! I won a bid on a Apple Cube! I'm so happy! (jumps up and down around the house) I can't wait for it to get here!
I have been drooling over them since I first seen them. I have been waiting for years till I had enough money to buy one. Finally! I'm going to get one!
I just hope its all that it can be. I'll probably have to upgrade the processor. I've seen a kit to make it into a dual processor system. I'm running a dual Xeon 500MHz right now, and the Cube is a 450MHz PPC. I'm hoping its just as fast as what I'm running. I'm a programmer, so its mostly just text processing.
I'm going to move my Xeon back to my server room and set it up as a mirror of my Webentory server. Then I can set my Cube on my desk next to me in all its glory.
I am sooo Happy right now!

Msg:#335 of 1364Date:2002-05-25Subj:I have a MP3 system setup on m...
I have a MP3 system setup on my home stereo. I found a software package to run on
it using PHP and Apache to play the MP3's. The program is called ToasterMP3. I found it on Freshmeat. I was using it today, and I found a number of things wrong with it. I decided to hack it and make it better. I started to look at the code and found that it would be easier to just write a new software. So I did.
MyMP3s. Its a PHP app running on Apache to play MP3 files. This way any system on my network can have access to it. It uses a queue system where the MP3 files are added to a buffer. The improvements that I made are in the way the HTML is displayed. It uses CSS to do the formatting. This makes it very easy to change the look and feel. I also made some changes in the list format. There is 4 columns now for listing the files and directories. I added a way to remove files from the queue. This version does not need the perl script to launch the MP3's.
This is a really well done system. I hope to add a few more things to it as time goes by. But for now, here is version 1.0.
This program requires PHP, mpg123 and aumix to work. To install it just copy it into a directory on your web server. Make sure that Apache has write access to the directory. Edit the mymp3s_api.php file to setup your mp3 directory and your queue file. Thats it. Your rolling.
You can customize it by changing the default.css file. You may have to change a few things in the code if you want to get really fancy with it.
I'm planning to add a few more features to it. I'm not sure what, but I will think of something.
