Msg:#1003 of 1363Date:2005-05-26Subj:The Aftermath and the Solution
I've been fighting with my wireless setup for years. I finally got it working for the most part a few months ago. No problems until I get hacked the other day. While resetting up all of my network I ran into some problems. Things just haven't been working right since.
I never liked the way I setup my WISP anyway, so tonight I decided to make it right.
As I'm messing with stuff I decided to strip it down to basics.
I setup AP2 and AP3 the same:
wlan0 is the back haul setup on a IP.
wlan1 is setup without any IP, just the wireless stuff.
I setup AP1 to bridge eth0 wlan0 wlan1 and wlan2. The br0 gets an IP.
I put the DHCP on my router.
Done. Just that simple. I have a wireless network with two relays.
For three years I've been busting my ass just to stumble on this tonight.
ARRRRGG!

So this morning I wake up to 100 phone calls. Nobody could get on the internet. Gesh. I hate making changes. Why do hackers have to bother people? Nothing better to do I guess.

Yep, I was finally hacked. I guess yesterday someone figured out a way into my server and setup some IRC program on it. I was doing some scans and found it.
It's funny, I was checking it out and found what channel it was logged into on IRC. So I joined the channel and found the person that hacked into my server. I talked with them for about two hours during the night.
I had to redo my whole server to make sure nothing was screwed up or left open. I also put my firewall in front of all my servers. I hope I got it configured to allow correct access to everything.
Anyway, I'm beat and need to sleep now.

I sure waste a lot of time looking at crawler pictures and reading build up specs. It's almost time to start building on my crawler. I sure hope I can do a good job on it. This weekend I'm going to spend half the day wheeling and the other half working on the rig. I need to start doing stuff on it right away. It's almost time to start really working on it. I hope I can work on it sunday also.
What first. I think that I'm going to start cleaning things off the frame and do some cut'n on the body. I want to trim the back end so it's narrow. I'll probably start sawing on it. If I screw it up, no problem, I'll just tub the whole thing.
Next I'll probably pull the front axle from the buggy. Steve isn't going to use it, so I might as well get it going. Then he can haul off the left overs. He is going to give me a Dana 60 rear full floater. I'll have to come up with my own locker for it. $200 (or I can weld it for free). I'll have to clean everything off the axle and get it prepped for welding tabs on it. I'm trying to make everything as simple as I can. (Keep It Small and Simple).
Then it's time to buy some tubing and a bender and get to work on the rest of it. June is coming quick and I want to be rolling sometime in July.

Msg:#999 of 1363Date:2005-05-17Subj:Smarty Template Engine
Recently I've been programming a template system to take care of displaying information differently for different companies. As I was writing it I found a few areas that would need a lot of thought. I don't have the time to do a good job on it, and I didn't want to put something out there that was basically a hack, so I went searching for a freeware solution.
Smarty Template Engine. It's awesome. Has everything I was working on, plus it has much, much more. It even covers loops and conditions. Searching more about Smarty I find that there are web designers that build Smarty templates for sale. So I've decided to integrate this into my current project.
This will free up tons of time and I can get onto more important things.
Thanks Smarty Developers.

SPAM is the legal way for people to vandalize.
They are the same people that spray paint on wall, break windows in houses, steel the hood ordainments off cars, break into school lockers, and knock down street signs.
Losers.

Msg:#997 of 1363Date:2005-05-01Subj:Over the Mountain
We did it. We made it over the mountains from Stagecoach to Sparks where the proposed new road is suppose to go.
We found a trail going up into the hills. There was a fence that was opened up, but no signs saying anything. So we drove on in expecting that it was BLM land. There were plenty of roads out there and the sights were really great.
I should have known that it was private property from the lack of trash and stripped, burned cars. While driving over the mountains on the really nice roads we passed a sheep herd and that kinda tipped us off. So we headed to the nearest exit.
Well, the nearest exit ended up being a gate with a huge lock on it. That doesn't stop the Samurai though. We found a path by the power lines to cross over onto the main road. We then ended up near i80 where our trip was finished.
It was an awesome trip. To end the day I even made it up Pipeline trail. That was a first for me. I guess the ground was just right since it rained a bit recently.

Can you say, "Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger!"
I can.
Whoo Hooo! This latest version of Mac OS X is the best yet. I've got to tell you, just the new stuff for Mail is worth the price of the upgrade. Then you get all the other cool stuff. I've already used Spotlight and it's really cool.
I bought the family pack so I could install it on all of our computers. Plus a friend of mine wanted a copy.
Only problem so far... Since it comes on a DVD and my dad does not have a DVD drive in his Mac, I could not install it on his system. That kinda sucks. I'm going to see if I can put it on CDs for him and get it installed. If nothing else, he can wait until Jane gets her new computer and we hook him up with the Cube.
Anyway... I've wasted about two hours now and I need to do some more work before it gets too late.

Msg:#995 of 1363Date:2005-04-27Subj:SPAM Gone Wild
Lately the spam coming into my inbox has been increasing greatly. I just can't keep up with it right now. I'm getting about 50-60 a day. Reporting the spam to spamcop.net is becoming a part time job that I have to pay to do. Each spam message I forward to them I have to go to a web page and report it. It takes hours. They really need a better way to report spam. Like, display all the spam subjects and have a check box next to them. Click the check box to submit the reports. That would be much better.

It's on it's way. Mac OS X Tiger (10.4) Family pack. I'm getting five licenses because I have a lot of computers. I can't wait to waste a whole day to it. Woo hoo!
Anyway... back to work.
